Round four of the Club TT league saw the NCTC TT Bandwagon roll into Red Lodge for the hotly anticipated Red Lodge 8 mile TT. In what was the coldest TT of the year yet, with hail showers passing (as I predicted!) just before the start, 36 members and 3 guests took to the course.
Showing great mental strength to shake off Owen Wilson’s pre-race mind games, Jordan Black was again fastest on the day with a time of 17:44. Martin Smith was 2nd in 19:07 and, despite some navigation issues on course, new member Simon Plant was third in 19:20. Charlotte Smith was the fastest Lady in 20:47, with Sophie Lee 2nd in 21:48
Dominic Cordner was fastest man on a road bike in 19:35 (hats off for being the only rider to track stand at the start), with Ross Birkett following in 19:54 and our Chairman David Cheshire third in 20:23 - things starting to click for the 2020 Road Bike TT Champion. Kerry Tate, having a break from her TT bike, was the fastest lady on a road bike in 22:30, with Judy Brown just a second behind in 22:31.
For the newcomer competition James Canham was the fastest man in 21:00, with Arlando Thompson second in 22:12. Kerry Louise Brennand was the fastest lady newcomer in 23:00 and Kate Young second in 24:13.
Special mentions to Paul Tulk and our kit co-ordinator Nigel Winnington for riding their first club TTs, and for new members Steve Dickens and Sam Dickens, riding their first TTs as members of the club (although many will recognise Steve as a regular participant in our TT series). I’m reliably informed that Sam loosened his legs for our 8 mile TT by completing a 300 mile audax over the bank holiday weekend!
Thanks to Matt Meek and Ken Parsons for assisting with the time keeping and Christopher James Maurice Swallow and Rob Speers for standing at junctions in the freezing cold and making sure people stayed on course. Matt deserves extra credit for setting out signs at all of the entries and exits from Red Lodge’s many roundabouts.
Oh, and apologies for making Josh Arksey’s ride home colder than it needed to be - I drove off to collect the signs before he could pick up his jacket!
